How to Tune your Acoustic Guitar

WHY ARE YOU NOT IN TUNE?

Well the answer to this question is the most crurial so playing guitar after learning what it is and how to hold it.

The acoustic guitar is comprised of 6 strings each named E, A, D, G, B, E. As you have learnt in the course you can memorize this as:

EDDY ATE DYNAMYTE GOOD BYE EDDY 💣

Poor EDDY. Each string on the guitar vibrates at a given frequency. Without getting too technical the thicker and longer the string the LOWER the frequency. The thinner and shorter the string the higher the frequecy. Lower frequencies are also known as BASS and higher frequencies are known as TREBLE. So on the guitar the frequencies (measured in Hertz) of the open strings are as follows:

> Thicker E String - 82.41 Hertz

> A String - 110 Hertz

> D String - 146.83 Hertz

> G String - 196 Hertz

> B String - 246.94 Hertz

> Thinner E String - 329.63 Hertz

These numbers may be confusing for some but it shows how accurate a string needs to be to qualify as being in tune. Ofcourse, in reality with playing the guitar, change in temperature and humidity, stretching of strings, aging of strings they become out of tune. Hence why it is important to tune the guitar reqularly.

We thank God for devices such as DIGITAL TUNERS that can achieve this. A tuner measures the frequency of a string when it is struck and tells you the frequency. Some even use a needle to show if you are flat (under the target frequency) or sharp (over the target frequency) for a given string. They also have a light that shows green when you a re ON THE MONEY and intune. You can get tuners on your phone, clip-ons and some that are inbuilt to your guitar. As a beginner, these are a good start to use. Eventually, you start to "FEEL" notes and will know when you are off by ear.

THIS IS WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS LESSON:

  • How to tune your guitar
  • How to know when you are sharp or flat
  • What devices are available to tune your guitar
